Called It. 176,000 Gallons of Oil Spilled 150 Miles From Standing Rock Protests

The Belle Fourche Pipeline ruptured near Belfield, ND this month, spilling 130,200 gallons of oil into the Ash Coulee Creek and 46,200 gallons onto the nearby hillside. The spill validates the Standing Rock protestors' concerns that pipelines are not safe and is being cited as an example of the dangers of fossil fuel usage in general.

While the estimated more than 30,000 minor oil spills that occur each year don't garner much attention or clean-up funding, the damage they cause shouldn't be ignored. Until clean-energy alternatives to fossil fuels are fully embraced, we need regulations to ensure that current energy practices don't irreparably damage our planet.
