Site Tutorial
Our website is broken into 7 sections along the top menu bar, as well as a button on the top right (LOG IN or MY ACCOUNT) for direct access to the User Community (explained below).
Here's what you'll find in each of these sections:
1. Home – overview of the site; top headlines, small preview of your community stream (see Community below), latest lectures, recent books, popular user blogs, most bumped (“liked”) articles, and an overview of the latest news and research.
2. News & Research - curated news from a variety of independent sources as well as research articles, both curated and Love Knowledge original work. The content is organized into categories and within those categories there are topics. For a discussion on current categories and topics, why they were selected, potential changes to make, and plans for future additions, please visit our Love Knowledge discussion forum.
At the top right of the main center panel there is a "Filter +" button. Click this to view the News & Research filters that will allow you to sort content by the following criteria:
Keyword – any keyword or search term anywhere in an article (also known technically as an ‘Item’)
Category – the main category or “bucket” an item belongs in. All items can only have one category.
Tag – the topics within each category are technically called ‘tags’. Content may have multiple tags and those tags are not restricted by the category that content sits in.
Type – to begin with, there will only be three content types; article, news, and video. ‘Video’ is simply an item featuring a video with some minor text, if any, to accompany. ‘News’ is an item discussing a current event. ‘Article’ is pretty much everything else for now. Opinion pieces, long term investigations, research papers, top recommended podcasts, and so on, all fall under ‘Article’ but some may become their own type in the future. See this discussion for more info.
Order by – this allows you to sort the results by most relevant, most recently published, alphabetical, features, most popular, highest rating, or last modified.
3. University – a directory of open online courses from various colleges and universities.
At the top right of the main center panel there is a "Filter +" button. Click this to view the University filters that will allow you to sort content by the following criteria:
Keyword – any keyword or search term anywhere in an article (also known technically as an ‘Item’)
Category – the main category or “bucket” an item belongs in. All items can only have one category.
Degree Program – the degree program a course belongs to.
Fee/No Fee – ‘Fee’ means there is free content but also an option to pay for a certificate or some added feature. ‘No Fee’ means everything offered from this course is free.
Order by – this allows you to sort the results by most relevant, most recently published, alphabetical, features, most popular, highest rating, or last modified.
4. Library – a directory of books for the same categories and topics as News & Research. The filters for the Library section are the same as those in News & Research except for the Type filter. In Library, Type can be either Book, eBook, or Audio Book.
5. About – learn more about Love Knowledge the organization in the About page. Blog is used to discuss website related matters as well as occasional op-ed pieces from anyone on the board.
6. Community – User Community is our social networking platform. User Discussions is our forum where you can discuss at length all the categories and topics from News & Research, as well as other user created topics. User Blogs is our blogging platform where anyone can start their own and potentially be featured on the home page. User Submissions is all the content users submit that they want to make publicly known and can potentially be added to the News & Research section. Finally, Submit Content to LK allows users to submit written articles, shared linked, or embedded YouTube videos. Those submissions then end up in the just mentioned User Submissions section. Note that a user can opt out of having their article added to News & Research. In that case it will only appear in the User Submissions section.
7. Donate – here you can help support our work and keep this website available as a resource and educational tool for the public. Donating can take a variety of forms, not just money. A donation of time, energy, ideas, and other acts of kindness go a long way as well. Find out more here.
8. Login or My Account - upon first arriving, the "Login" button will take you to the login page to sign in. Once signed in, this button will become the "My Account" button with 10 options to navigate to in the User Community as well as a "Log Out" button to sign off. The User Community dashboard has a drop-down menu with these options and a few more but the "My Account" menu items are supposed to be the most useful areas of the User Community.
