Censored 2013: The Top Censored Stories and Media Analysis of 2011-2012

Censored 2013: The Top Censored Stories and Media Analysis of 2011-2012

Every year since 1976, Project Censored, our nation’s oldest news-monitoring group–a university-wide project at Sonoma State University founded by Carl Jensen, directed for many years by Peter Phillips, and now under the leadership of Mickey Huff–has produced a Top-25 list of underreported news stories and a book, Censored, dedicated to the stories that ought to be top features on the nightly news, but that are missing because of media bias and self-censorship.

Seven Stories Press has been publishing this yearbook since 1994, featuring the top stories listed democratically in order of importance according to students, faculty, and a national panel of judges. Each of the top stories is presented at length, alongside updates from the investigative reporters who broke the stories.

Beyond the Top-25 stories, additional chapters delve further into timely media topics: The Censored News and Media Analysis section provides annual updates on Junk Food News and News Abuse, Censored Deja Vu, signs of hope in the alternative and news media, and the state of media bias and alternative coverage around the world. In the Truth Emergency section, scholars and journalists take a critical look at the US/NATO military-industrial-media empire. And in the Project Censored International section, the meaning of media democracy worldwide is explored in close association with Project Censored affiliates in universities and at media organizations all over the world.

A perennial favorite of booksellers, teachers, and readers everywhere, Censored is one of the strongest life signs of our current collective desire to get the news we citizens need–despite what Big Media tells us.

Incompetence, corruption and ultimate disaster must come to any people which is denied access to the facts (W. Lippmann), January 5, 2013 By  Luc REYNAERT (Beernem, Belgium) – See all my reviews

For `Project Censored’, censorship is a form of propaganda – deceptive communication used to influence public opinion to benefit a special interest.

In this `essential handbook’ (N. M. Ahmed) the top censored stories in the mass media for the period 2011-2012 are contained in five clusters:

The Police State and Civil Liberties : Signs of an Emerging Police State, FBI Agents Responsible for Majority of Terrorists Plots, Prison Slavery, Laws Would Make Many Forms of Nonviolent Protest Illegal, NY Police Plant Drugs on Innocent People to Meet Arrest Quotas

Economics: First Federal Reserve Audit Reveals Trillions Loaned to Major Banks, Small Network of Corporations Run the Global Economy, Members of Congress Grow Wealthier, Education Reform a Trojan Horse for Privatization, Who Are the Top 1 Percent and How Do They Earn a Living?, Students Crushed by Student Loans, Conservatives Want to Privatize Postal Services, Bank Laundered Money for Latin American Drug Cartel

Environment and Health : Oceans in Peril, Fukushima Nuclear Disaster Worse than Anticipated, Dangers of Cellular Phones and Microwave Ovens

Human Costs of War and Violence : NATO Bombed Water Supply Station in Libya, US Joins Forces with al-Qaeda in Syria, US Covers Up Afghan Massacre, Guantanamo Dryboarding

Women and Race : Sexual Violence Against Women Soldiers, Palestinian Women Shackled during Childbirth

This book reveals also such important issues as the fact that FBI agents are responsible for orchestrating terrorist plots, so that they can thwart them; how British Special Forces played a key role in overseeing Libya’s so-called `freedom fighters’; and, the worldwide economic power of transnational corporations illustrated with the example of a mining company.
Another crucial issue is what Thomas Jefferson called `the only security of all’: free press. `Project Censored’ shows how the mass media controlled by corporate powers are creating a virtual world with junk news (pseudo-events) and infotainment, like carnival-like political debates, in order to hide the real and essential facts about human life and its future on this planet.

This volume is a must read for all those who want to understand the world we live in.

Shame on the Corporate Media, December 13, 2012 By  Conflicted Consumer (Buffalo, New York) – See all my reviews

Project Censored is an important watchdog, shaming the corporate media every year by selecting the 25 most important under-reported stories. The 2013 selections is especially poignant. The previous reviewer claims that these stories are not timely as some citations predate 2011-2012. What happened in 2012, however, is that a critical mass of evidence formed, building on earlier evidence, to make compelling verifiable stories. Case in point, Censored 2013 reports on the health effects of cell phones, microwave ovens and fluoride. Old news? Yes. But the old news was that there was a controversy. New studies made public in 2011-2012, however, offer compelling evidence of these health effects, moving the concern from the tin hat crowd to mainstream research universities. That’s the news. The evidence is now compelling. Ditto on the story about thousands of American deaths predicted to result from the Fukushima disaster, the story about our emerging police state and the ecological holocaust in our oceans. We knew these stories were emerging. Now they’re here. Not theories or dark predictions, but realities. The most troubling fact, is that these are realities that should be front page news. They weren’t years ago when allegations emerged, and they’re no now, that hard evidence has confirmed the worst predictions. This all becomes evident when one reads beyond the top 25 synopsis, and looks at the detailed reporting. Good job Project Censored.

Excellent Book, A Must Read, Informative, but…, February 20, 2013 By  Blessed Truth (USA) – See all my reviews

…this book is very redundant in many of the stories and information provided. I feel this book could be far shorter if they cut out all the rehashing.

That being said, this is a good “behind the screen of the Wizard” book where you get a very good view of what’s going on, but the media doesn’t either talk about, or go into detail.
